Action Embroidery
2014
Clear PVC, embroidery floss, thread, key-chain rings, zippers, grommets, snaps.
A durational project in which the same action - hand embroidering, was carried out everyday for three months, applying the ethos of ‘action painting’ to the traditonal craft of embroidery. Sometimes planned, sometimes improvised, the embroideries negotiate the process and practice of traditional embroidering. The PVC reveals what is usually hidden, every knot, every mistake - everything is part of the final piece, asserting the maker and their experience of making. Each piece of embroidery was then used to construct a small, functional, object - key chain, wallet, pencil pouch, mini backpack etc. Again, the processes used to create these objects were action based, having more to do with the experience of physically making than the sucess or specific qualities of the products produced.
